Ever hear the term elements of art? The term refers to the elements which combine together and form the composition of an artwork. They essentially build up an art piece by making use of various methods. These seven elements of art can be applied, whether you’re an artist, graphic designer, sculptor, photographer, or painter. Understanding how to identify these seven elements of art is important when creating any art.
These seven elements of art include:
- Line
- Shape
- Color
- Texture
- Form
- Value
- Space
Line Element
Line is the element which incorporates the use of lines. Different types of lines can be used to add movement or texture to the image. Notice how lines are used to create a wooden texture on the ship in the image.
Shape Element
Shape refers to the element which makes use of shapes, such as squares, circles, and triangles, among many other more complex shapes. Making use of shapes helps to create a unique pattern or design.
Color Element
Color is applied to create a tone within an artwork or highlight a specific part of the design. It can also be used to separate different concepts or contrasting ideas within an image. Notice how a variety of colors are used in this image.
Form Element
Form is the element which adds depth to the artwork. This can be used to create scenery and show a distance or to make a two-dimensional object appear as three-dimensional.
Texture Element
Texture is the part of the artwork that creates an illusion of what the image might feel like. Art that is two-dimensional must use specific methods to show what the image feels like, such as adding sparkly tones to show a metal object or small strands to depict fur or feathers, as seen in the image.
Value Element
Value is the element to use when determining whether to make an art piece lighter or darker. For example, changing the shades of the sky for evening to night would make use of the value element.
Space Element
Space refers to the amount of actual space that is used in an artwork. While some pieces may incorporate many colors and objects in the art, others might make more use of space to separate a portion of the art. Typically, space is used to focus on a certain object as seen in the image.
