First Day of Fall: What is the Fall Equinox?

The fall equinox occurs on the day that is commonly referred to as the first day of fall. This event is what causes the start of the autumn season. So, what is the fall equinox exactly?

I love fall

The fall season is clearly characterized by its cooler weather. This occurs as the Sun directs its light further away. Instead of the sunlight directing at the equator, or near it, it then moves southward of the equator, which causes these cooler temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere. Since the heat of the Sun is now further away, there is also less daylight in the Northern Hemisphere.

In basic terms though, the fall equinox sort of represents all the autumn things, like pumpkin spice, colorful leaves, and the start of the holiday season, right?
