What is Texture in Design?

Texture is one of several elements of design. These elements are essentially the building blocks that are used to create a new design. They include color, space, lines, form, shape, value, and of course, texture.

Texture is the element that shows how the content within the piece would feel. It provides a sensory aspect to the design, indicating whether the objects are smooth, rough, damaged, slippery, cotton-like, etc. The fluffy fur on cat, the shiny scales on a fish, or even the glimmer on a diamond are all examples.

Examples of the Texture Element of Design

Notice how many forms of texture there are in one image. The layers within the bird’s feathers show more concentration in certain areas to indicate a softer tone. The details on the branch of the tree also show how the use of texture implies that it is a bit rough but still strong enough to hold the bird with its healthy, green leaves.

This little frog also shows the element of texture in a different way. The effects used to create the frog show its shiny, smooth skin, just like real frogs would reflect. The eyes also make use of texture with a glossy touch.
