International Day for Biological Diversity is recognized yearly on May 22. Biological diversity, or simply biodiversity, refers to the way in which the Earth is made up of various species. It indicates how “diverse” an ecosystem or environment is and how different types of animals and organisms come together.

Biodiversity is evident in different types of ecosystems. This includes ecosystems in the ocean and on the land. For example, coral reefs, as seen in the image, consist of various species of fish and plants.

On the land, different species are seen together as well. See how both zebras and elephants are located within the same ecosystem. Biodiversity can be found in all types of biomes and ecosystems.
